NASA’s newest and most powerful telescope, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, has launched to help study dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets.
The telescope is a multi-billion dollar venture, and is able to get photos 100 times larger than the Hubble telescope, and according to NASA, images will be released by early 2027. The Roman telescope will orbit the sun, and is expected to be in space for 5 years to start.
“Roman will give us a new atlas of the universe, push the boundaries of discovery, and demonstrate what is possible when America’s space program pairs bold ambition with disciplined execution,”said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman in a press release.
The telescope is named after NASA’s first chief astronomer/ first female executive Nancy Grace Roman, who was intrigued by dark energy back when the Hubble telescope launched. Detecting dark matter can be done just by movement of other matter in the universe, and Roman will aim to try to narrow down what it is by “the most comprehensive 3D map of the distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters across the universe,” according to NASA.
